The Challenge

Fittings, Inc. provides fast-turnaround delivery of high quality, American manufactured beverage fittings. The previous catalog and web site were very difficult to understand because they have a wide inventory and the relationship between various parts is quite complex. Most of the time before clients would send in orders they found it was necessary to first consult with the company's sales staff to make sure they were getting their orders right.
The Solution
Working together with Alexandr Panek, an information design specialist, we helped the client to re-evaluate the entire product line and its organization. By working to create a system of a few logically grouped categories we found customers could much better understand the full scope of products on offer. Using a color based system made it possible to quickly see which products would work with others.
While the print catalog is the main way that clients browse Fittings' inventory, having the new web site has made it much easier for sales staff to discuss products with clients who don't have the catalog immediately available.
The Results
Within the first month of publishing the new catalog and web site, Fittings has told us that the amount of support they have give for each order has dropped and that now less than half of the orders placed need help from their sales staff at all. Now that the sales staff has more free time they are able to concentrate on marketing and following up with potential clients instead of helping to fill out order forms.
